Washington, D.C.
Nach vielen langen Monaten der Reiseabstinenz war es nun endlich wieder soweit und ich machte mich auf den Weg zum Flughafen. Als Assistant Director durfte ich in diesem Jahr wieder an der National Model UN in New York teilnehmen und wollte die Chance nutzen, mir D.C. anzuschauen. Und wie sagt man schließlich so schön? Vor der Arbeit kommt das Vergnügen. Und so entschied ich mich für einen kurzen Zwischenstopp in Washington, D.C. - der Hauptstadt der USA.
After many long months of abstinence from travelling, it was finally time again and I made my way to the airport. As Assistant Director, I was allowed to participate in the National Model UN in New York again this year and wanted to take the chance to see D.C., the capital of the US.
Nach drei Flügen, 24 Stunden Reisezeit und ein paar Stunden Schlaf wachte ich dann am Samstag in meinem Hotel in Washington auf und begab mich auf eine kleine Erkundungstour durch die Stadt. Schon vor der Reise hatte ich eine Führung mit DC by Foot gebucht und konnte so viele interessante Dinge über Capitol Hill lernen.
After three flights, 24 hours of travel and a few hours of sleep, I woke up on Saturday in my hotel in Washington and went on a little exploration tour of the city. In order to actually learn a few things about the city and its history, I had booked a tour with DC by Foot and was surprised by many of the facts I learned there.
Auf der Führung sahen wir uns natürlich das Kapitol an, aber auch die Kongressbibliothek, die umliegenden Bürogebäude und Parks und den Obersten Gerichtshof der Vereinigten Staaten. Ein paar interessante Fakten: Die Kongressbibliothek beherbergt 171,636,507 Exemplare, die Kuppel des Kapitols wiegt über viertausend Tonnen und besteht größtenteils aus Gusseisen und auf der dritten Etage des Obersten Gerichtshof befindet sich ein vollausgestattetes Basketballfeld.
On the tour we saw the Capitol, the Library of Congress, the surrounding office buildings and parks, and the Supreme Court of the United States. A few interesting facts: The Library of Congress houses 171,636,507 items, the Capitol dome weighs over four thousand tons and is made mostly of cast iron, and there is a fully equipped basketball court on the third floor of the Supreme Court.
An den Capitol Hill schließt sich die National Mall, oder auch Nationalpromenade, an. Sie stellt die Verbindung zwischen Kapitol und Lincoln Memorial dar und beherbergt außerdem das Washington Monument und zahlreiche Museen. Das fast 170 Meter hohe Washington Monument wurde gebaut, um dem ersten Präsidenten der USA, George Washington, zu gedenken und wurde 1884 fertiggestellt.
The National Mall is the connection between the Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial and also houses the Washington Monument and numerous museums. The nearly 170-metre-high Washington Monument was built to commemorate the first president of the USA, George Washington, and was completed in 1884.
Für meinen zweiten Tag in D.C. hatte ich eine Führung auf dem Nationalfriedhof Arlington gebucht. Über diesen Ort gibt es so viel zu lernen und so verging die zweieinhalbstündige Führung über den Friedhof wie im Flug. Während des Rundgangs hatten wir außerdem die Gelegenheit die Wachablösung am Grabmal des unbekannten Soldaten zu beobachten.
For my second day in D.C., I had booked a guided tour of Arlington National Cemetery. There is so much to learn about this place and so the two and a half hour tour of the cemetery flew by. During the tour, we also had the opportunity to watch the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Und dann war meine Zeit in D.C. auch schon wieder vorüber und es ging zurück nach New York. Ich kann D.C. auf jeden Fall nur empfehlen. Die Stadt hat so viel zu bieten und ist auf jeden Fall einen Besuch wert.
And just like that my time in D.C. was already over. I can really recommend to visit this beautiful city that has so many things to offer and I am sure I will be back.
